Forensic and Medico-Legal Psychology Enquiries

A distinct area of professional practice

Forensic and medico-legal psychology sits at the intersection of psychological assessment and legal, compensation or justice processes. The role, consent process, confidentiality limits and reporting obligations can differ significantly from ordinary therapy. Dr Lutchman has professional experience in forensic mental health and corrective-services environments, and public practitioner information lists forensic psychology and medico-legal services among her areas of work.

Clarify the purpose before booking

A referral should clearly identify the instructing party, legal or administrative context, questions to be addressed, documents available, deadlines and whether a written report or court-related work is required. Psychology Headquarters should confirm that the request falls within Dr Lutchman’s current scope, capacity and conflict-of-interest requirements before accepting the matter.

Therapy and independent assessment are different roles

A treating psychologist advocates for the client’s therapeutic interests, while an independent medico-legal assessor has a different duty and purpose. These roles should not be blurred. A person already receiving therapy from Dr Lutchman may not be suitable for an independent forensic opinion in the same matter.

Fees and documentation

Forensic and medico-legal work usually involves time outside the interview itself, including file review, scoring, report preparation, liaison and possibly attendance at conferences or hearings. Terms, fees and payment responsibility should be agreed in writing before work begins.

Professional referrers can send an enquiry outlining the assessment question, context, required output and timeframe.
