Frequently Asked Questions About Seeing a Psychologist

Common questions about referrals, Medicare rebates, telehealth, and what to expect.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist?

A clinical psychologist has completed additional specialised training and supervised practice in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of psychological conditions, beyond the general registration held by all psychologists.

Do I need a GP referral?

A referral is generally not required if you plan to pay privately. A valid referral is required if you want to claim eligible Medicare benefits under Better Access.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?

Eligible people with a Mental Health Treatment Plan can claim Medicare benefits for up to 10 individual and 10 group mental health treatment services per calendar year, subject to referral requirements.

What happens during the first psychology appointment?

Your first appointment focuses on understanding your concerns, history, goals and current functioning — there is no need to arrive with a perfectly organised explanation.

How many psychology sessions will I need?

It varies by person — some attend a handful of sessions, others benefit from ongoing, longer-term care. Progress is reviewed together over time.

Do you provide telehealth psychology appointments?

Yes — Dr Lutchman offers secure video telehealth appointments for suitable clients in NSW, alongside in-person appointments at four Sydney North-West locations.

Which areas does Psychology Headquarters serve?

The Ponds, Stanhope Gardens, Schofields, Windsor, South Windsor, Richmond, Rouse Hill, Kellyville, Kellyville Ridge, Beaumont Hills and surrounding Sydney North-West and Hawkesbury suburbs.

What concerns can a clinical psychologist help with?

Anxiety, depression, trauma, stress and burnout, anger and emotional regulation, workplace difficulties, chronic pain, and a range of other clinical psychological concerns.
